Learn how to install DeatschWerks convoluted tubing to protect your fuel pump lines. Step-by-step guide with tips for a secure fit.
Quick answer
Install DeatschWerks convoluted tubing over your fuel pump inlet or outlet hose to shield it from abrasion and heat. This 100mm, 8mm ID tubing slides onto standard fuel lines for a snug, protective fit.
Why use convoluted tubing?
Fuel pump hoses in tight engine bays rub against brackets, panels, or other components. Convoluted tubing creates a flexible armor layer that resists cuts and heat without adding stiffness. The 8mm inner diameter fits many common pump inlet and outlet barbs.
One trade-off: the tubing adds a small amount of diameter to the hose, so check clearance before final routing. If space is extremely tight, you may need a shorter section or a different routing path.
Installation steps
- 1. Measure and cut the tubing: Hold the convoluted tubing against the section of fuel hose you want to protect. Mark the length – you typically need 50–80mm to cover the vulnerable area. Use a sharp utility knife to cut the tubing cleanly. A jagged cut can snag on nearby parts. Cut slightly longer than needed; you can always trim, but you cannot add length.
- 2. Slide the tubing onto the hose: Apply a small amount of silicone spray or dish soap to the inside of the tubing and the outside of the hose. Twist and push the tubing onto the hose until it covers the target area. Avoid using petroleum-based lubricants, which can degrade the hose material. If the tubing does not slide on easily, try warming it gently with a heat gun to soften the plastic.
- 3. Secure and position the tubing: Once the tubing is in place, slide it so the vulnerable section (e.g., near a clamp or bracket) is centered inside the tubing. Use a zip tie at each end to prevent the tubing from shifting, but do not overtighten – the tubing should be snug, not compressed. Check that the tubing does not kink or pinch the hose underneath. Re-route the hose if needed.
